Digimon: Source Code
Hey! Digimon! In case you haven’t heard yet, there’s a new Digimon mobile RPG game coming out, and here’s some information from the Digital World to get you caught up to speed!
Bandai Namco originally announced Digimon: Source Code back in December of 2021. However, the game’s website was unexpectedly shut down in April of 2022. This led the fan community to speculate that the project had been dropped or canceled. However, Bandai Namco clearly had a plan in place because during the ChinaJoy 2023 event, Bandai Namco presented an exclusive booth where attendees could experience first-hand a playable demo of Digimon: Source Code.
This demo gave players the opportunity to experience two distinct game levels, within these levels we witnessed fan-favorite Digimon like WarGreymon, MetalGarurumon, HerculesKabuterimon and The Dark Masters show off their skills with powerful attacks, intricate Combos and a very impressive mechanic that utilizes team-based fusion as we witnessed WarGreymon and MetalGarururmon fuse to become Omnimon.
Digimon: Source Code gives the player the ability to take command and lead their very own team of Digital Monsters into battle as the player chooses which actions and attacks their digital partners will use during combat. Digimon: Source Code follows a turn-based RPG paradigm that emphasizes swiftness, precision, and creative strategy. Each Digimon wields an array of abilities ranging from standard attacks and evasive maneuvers to special techniques that require certain resources to pull off. An important note is that your enemies must also manage their resource consumption. In situations where you may not have the required energy for special attacks there’s an option known as “overloading”, this option allows your Digimon to execute special attacks regardless if they have the energy for it or not. Overloading can help you out in a pinch, but keep in mind that there will be a negative cost to your Digimon in battle.
Another highlight of the highly anticipated mobile game is the exciting team building aspect, which boasts a current roster of approximately 300 Digimon and allows the player to have a team of up to 5 digimon. Which Digimon you choose for your team can play a significant role in how your team functions during battle and how well your Digimon synergize with each other. Teaming certain Digimon together can lead to exciting and powerful team attacks, with some attacks even referencing legendary and fan favorite moments from the Digimon anime and franchise.
Next up! It wouldn’t be Digimon without Digivolution! Digimon: Source Code doesn’t disappoint in this facet either, as it gives your Digital Monsters multiple digivolution paths to choose from as well as unlockable skills and abilities. This flexibility helps to make your game experience unique while customizing your Digimon partners’ skillset to whatever style of play that fits you best.
Currently, Digimon: source code is exclusive to China where fans in the region can pre-register on the official website. However, I’m leaning on T.K.’s crest of Hope that we’ll get to see a global release since it appears the publisher is simply Bandai Namco and not specifically Bandai Namco Hong Kong Division or a similar type of region based publisher.
Overall, the demo for Digimon: Source Code looks absolutely incredible and so much fun to play. I’m hoping that Bandai will recognize how much the rest of the world loves Digimon and will see fit to give us that global release.
Until next time, I’ll see you all in the Digital World!
